///婚前準備手續
The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region
The Marriage Registration and Records Office
3/F, Low Block
Queensway Government Offices
66 Queensway
///至香港結婚及後續
I always want to write an article about how to get married for a mixed couple of British and Taiwanese because we got a lot of help from the forums and blogs on the Internet.
Since now my career is related to weddings (as a makeup artist), I feel more motivated to finish this article.
We hope more people with similar situations find it helpful for the drive-people-crazy process and save more time from avoiding mistakes.
If you and your fiancée have the similar situations listed below, you will find this article very useful:
- You currently don’t live with your fiancée, and you don’t plan to live together right after getting married.
- Your main celebration will be held in Taiwan.a
- Your British spouse doesn’t live in London or Edinburgh.(If you plan to get married in Taiwan, your British fiancée needs to provide the Result of Marriage Search to prove him/herself is single. To get this, your British fiancée needs to go to London or Edinburgh to get the Search approved by Taipei Representative Office in the U.K.)
///Before Registering Your Marriage
After a lot of research, we decided to get married in Hong Kong.
There are two main reasons of our decision:
- As a mixed couple of British and Taiwanese, neither of you needs to apply for the Result of Marriage Search to register your marriage in Hong Kong.
- The Marriage Certificate issued by HongKongese government is written in both English and Chinese, so you don’t need to translate to the other language for other purposes afterwards.
After deciding to get married in Hong Kong , the following things you need to do is listed below(Please do check the official links provided in the steps before your action since the information we give is based in 2012):
- 2 months before your wedding in Taiwan, you need to inform the HongKongese government that you intend to get married in Hong Kong. Please go to the HongKonges government website to download Notice of Intended Marriage (MR1)and Information Required for Registration of Marriage (MR21B) .(If your celebration in Taiwan is intended to be held in Oct, you should start preparing in Aug, and give a notice to the HongKongese government in Sep. That way, your registration in Hong Kong will be arranged in Oct according to your wish. Please note that you have to finish your registration in Hong Kong within 3 months once you give the notice.)
- The completed notice form (MR1) with your signature should be authenticated by a Notary Public of the country where you live. (If you are living in different territories/countries, the form is only required to be authenticated by a Notary Public of the country where one of you lives.) For more information, please go to Q7 of this page. We went to Taiwan Shilin District Court to get this done (only one of you needs to go, but you still need to fill out the information of you both, it is better to tell your fiancée to send a copy of his or her passport and bring it with you to the court ). Please print out the Notice, and bring your passport and ID card before you go. The fee is NTD 750; you can collect it the same day.
- Get a bank draft in Hong Kong dollars payable to"The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region" (Most bank can do this for you, and please do check the currency is HKD)
- Send the notice, information sheet and bank draft together as a registered mail to:
The Marriage Registration and Records Office
3/F, Low Block
Queensway Government Offices
66 Queensway
Hong Kong - After 7-10 days you posted your mail, the HongKongese government will exhibit your notice for at least 15 clear days. If there is no objection against your marriage, you marriage may take place in Hong Kong. (The exhibition is why you don’t need to provide the Result of Marriage Search to get married in Hong Kong.) Meanwhile, you will receive a confirmation email from HongKongese government telling you about the date, venue (the date and venue will normally be arranged according to your wish in the notice you give to the government) and fee (HKD1,935, you can pay by cash on the day of your marriage) of your marriage. If you want to change the date, please write back to the government.
- After the date is certain, you should start arrange the flights and hotels for you and your fiancée, and it is recommended that you stay Hong Kong for at least 6 days (4 days before your registration, and 2 days after the registration). The reason of 6 day stay is because the government will ask you to report to them 4 days earlier than your marriage, and you need 2 days to collect your proved marriage certificate from Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Hong Kong.
- You need to bring two witnesses above the age of 18 with their original travel documents. They can be your family or your friends in Hong Kong(Ours was a lovely HongKongese girl I met on plane. We really appreciated the help) . The HongKongese government won’t be responsible for arranging the witnesses.
///Arriving in Hong Kong & Going back to Taiwan
- Arrive in Hong Kong according on the date provided in the confirmation email and check in with the government (the check in and registration venues are different, but both will be shown clearly in the confirmation email). Bring your witnesses with you on the day you get married, and get the marriage certificate. Prepare 2 copies once you get your certificate (normally your hotel can photocopy your certificate for you).
- Go to Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Hong Kong to get your marriage certificate proved by Taiwanese government. For the address and more details, please click this page. You can collect your certificate the next day or have it mailed home (but it takes 10 days to mail home, to collect on your own is recommended). Please note that if your spouse is not going back to Taiwan with you, you must apply for the Declaration of the Chinese Name of your British spouse (more information is in the Q1 of the provided link, and the Declaration is to be used for the registration of household in Taiwan) in TECO.
- Within 30 days after your registration in Hong Kong, you and your British spouse should bring the proved certificate, the passport of your British spouse, your ID card (you can also bring a recent ID photo you like because they will give you a new ID card) to your local Household Registration Office in Taiwan to register your marriage. You must go through this process, or the Taiwanese government will still assume you are single. Your British spouse doesn’t need to go through any process in U.K.
- Start getting busy again for the wedding in Taiwan :P
We hope the information above will be helpful for mixed couples like us. If you also want to know how to apply for a British spouse visa for your Taiwanese spouse, please read my next article “Moving to U.K. with my Hubby.”
